SNMP Drivers Reference
SNMP drivers (also called Network Device Drivers or NDDs) provide vendor-specific handling for SNMP devices. They extend the default SNMP handling with capabilities such as interface enumeration, VLAN information, topology data, and hardware inventory.
For SNMP configuration procedures, see SNMP Configuration.
Driver Auto-Detection
Each driver implements an auto-detection mechanism. During configuration polling, NetXMS queries all loaded drivers to determine the best match for a device:
-
Each driver evaluates the device’s SNMP sysObjectID and returns a priority value (higher is better match); only values greater than 0 make a driver a candidate, and values above 255 are clamped to 255
-
Drivers are sorted by priority in descending order
-
The system calls each driver’s validation method (which may perform additional SNMP queries) until one confirms support
-
If no driver matches, the
GENERICdriver is used
The list of available drivers is logged to the server log file at startup.
Setting a Fallback Driver
The snmp.driver custom attribute on the node object names a driver to use when auto-detection finds no match.
It is a fallback only — it cannot override a wrong auto-detection result.
To prevent an incorrectly detected driver from being selected, blacklist it with NetworkDeviceDrivers.BlackList (see below).
Blacklisting Drivers
You can globally blacklist specific SNMP drivers by setting the NetworkDeviceDrivers.BlackList server configuration variable to a comma-separated list of driver names.
This prevents incorrect auto-detection of some drivers on particular devices.
A server restart is required after changing this variable.

Driver Capabilities
SNMP drivers extend the default SNMP handling with vendor-specific capabilities:
-
Interface enumeration — using vendor-specific MIBs for accurate interface data
-
Interface state detection — operational/admin status, speed, duplex
-
VLAN information — VLAN membership and configuration
-
Topology data — bridge forwarding tables, LLDP/CDP neighbor discovery
-
Hardware inventory — component trees, module layout, port numbering
-
Wireless information — access points, wireless stations, radio interfaces
-
Configuration backup — running and startup configuration retrieval
-
Custom metrics — vendor-specific performance data
